Established in 1982 by Professor Ali Baquer, Concerned Action Now is a mission-led, non-political and non-profit NGO. CAN’s services are distinctive and varied, focusing on advocacy, action and research. CAN’s interventions help in finding contemporary solutions to effectively tackle disability issues with the active help of people with disabilities and professionals.
The human rights movement has boldly and categorically shifted the attention of policy makers from the mere provision of charitable services to vigorously protecting their basic right to dignity and self-respect.Following this path CAN focuses on reshaping our society on the basis of the social model of disability. We believe in bringing forth the 90 million disabled of India into the mainstream by empowering them and others with knowledge of their rights and their rightful place in the system, a system to keep the disabled in and not shut them out.
CAN’s gamut of activities stem from research, based on Action Learning techniques, as a tool to collect and disseminate information on all issues concerning disability; from data collection to the law and its safeguards, from health care and sanitation issues, availability or the lack of services and the strengthening and improvement of existing provisions.
